Description

In 1971, an eclectic group of Canadians set out to stop Richard Nixon's atomic bomb tests in Alaska and ended up creating the worldwide green movement, giving birth to Greenpeace. Media savvy from the beginning, these pioneers captured their seat-of-their-pants activist adventures on 16mm film. From this vivid archive and sly narration by Robert Hunter—an early guiding force of the organization—director Jerry Rothwell has created the thrilling, sometimes terrifying, How to Change the World. When youthful energy comes up against the complexities of a growing organization, and idealism meets compromise, the group find their battle to save the planet forces them to fight each other as well. This insightful film is a vibrant and moving reflection on the struggle to balance the political and the personal.

Robert Hunter's daughter activist Emily Hunter will participate in Q&As on August 7 and 8.
