Join legendary documentarian Frederick Wiseman (National Gallery, Titicut Follies) on an immersive journey through Jackson Heights, New York. With more than 167 languages spoken in the community’s diverse urban blocks, the neighbourhood offers a unique vantage point from which to witness the changing fabric of American cities. In his signature unobtrusive style, Wiseman turns his empathetic lens on all aspects of the community: from a training course for aspiring yellow cab drivers, to dinner parties for veterans, Arabic lessons and mobile soup kitchens. Even those unfamiliar with Wiseman’s work will be moved by the depth of affect that comes from simple observation. In a city as wealthy as New York, preserving low-income neighbourhoods has become increasingly difficult, making Wiseman’s 40th film both a rare document and an urgent call to arms.
In English, Spanish, Arabic and Hindi, with English subtitles.
Director Frederick Wiseman will participate in a Skype Q&A on Sunday, November 22.
