Over 25 years after creating the instantly essential holocaust documentary Shoah, Claude Lanzmann returned to the scene with The Last of the Unjust. Lanzmann casts his lens on Benjamin Murmelstein, a member of the “Jewish Council” in a concentration camp; essentially, a Jewish man who was given more power and privilege than his peers. With a wonderfully wry and authentic voice, Murmelstein describes fighting bitterly with Adolf Eichmann for seven years, managing to help around 121,000 Jewish people leave the country, the so-called “model ghetto” of Theresienstadt and the savage contradictions of the Jewish Councils.
In German, French and English, with English subtitles.
