Encore: Bringing back some of the hottest documentaries for an encore presentation.
With its ancient palaces and stately gardens, the Lahore of Pakistan's independence was a haven for musicians, artists and poets. Following the imposition of Sharia law in the late 1970s, this Lahore only exists in memory. But in 2004, Sachal Studios attempted to create a space for music. With an undeniably catchy twist, traditional strings and drums combine to create earworm renditions of international classics. Their live adaptation of Dave Brubeck’s “Take Five” now has over one million views on YouTube and attracted the attention of jazz legend Wynton Marsalis, who invited the troupe to take the stage at New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center. With immense skill and enjoyment, directors Andy Schocken and Academy Award winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy bring the story of an ensemble looking to reclaim and reinvigorate their sound in one country’s narrowing cultural sphere.
In English, Punjabi and Urdu, with English subtitles.
