Description

The Harvard Seal Documentary Film Club: Thought-provoking films and lively conversations shared over drinks with a group of curious, passionate and engaged doc lovers.

Take a rousing tour of music, feminism, pop culture and the riot grrrl movement through the life and work of Kathleen Hanna, lead singer of the punk band Bikini Kill and dance-punk trio Le Tigre. Through 20 years of archival footage and intimate interviews with Hanna, The Punk Singer takes viewers on a fascinating tour of contemporary music and offers a never-before-seen view into the life of this fearless leader. Many of The Punk Singer's themes are as relevant now as they were 25 years ago when Kathleen Hanna and her bandmates were smashing boundaries and making music that inspired and awakened a generation of young women.

The film will be followed by a Skype conversation with Andrea Warner, an associate producer at CBC Music and critic, on contemporary feminism and popular culture. Warner is co-host and writer of the Pop This! podcast and zine and author of We Oughta Know: How Four Women Ruled the 90s and Changed Canadian Music.

Doc & Beer Combo: $18 (Bloor members: $14, $12, $6), includes screening, a can of beer and a large popcorn.
