Music on Film: Inspiring music docs of all genres paired with special guest speakers selected by The Royal Conservatory of Music.
It was a summer day in New York City, 1958, and a young photographer paced nervously in front of a Harlem brownstone. He hoped to take a picture for Esquire commemorating the golden age of jazz and, despite fearing a meager turnout, he ended up with what is now the world-famous "class photograph" of America's jazz legends. A Great Day in Harlem zooms in and out of this astonishing photograph, interweaving archival performance footage, remarkable home video and rare interviews with jazz masters present that day—including Sonny Rollins, Horace Silver, Art Farmer, Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey—the photographer Art Kane and some neighbourhood kids who snuck into the frame.
Includes a post-screening Q&A with trombonist Russ Little, who will also perform a short trombone solo, moderated by Mervon Mehta, Executive Director of The Royal Conservatory of Music's Performing Arts Division.
