Description

Doc Soup: Hot Docs' monthly screening series that presents Festival hits and award-winning docs.

Shortly after premiering his short film The Sound of People at Sundance 2008, Irish filmmaker Simon Fitzmaurice was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (ALS). He was only 34 and his wife was pregnant with their third child. Recovering from the shock, Simon refused to give up, starting work on the script for his first feature film, My Name is Emily. Seven years later, Simon has completed the film, directing it only using of his eyes and eye gaze technology. Narrated by Colin Farrell, using extracts from Simon’s best-selling memoir, this inspiring and emotional journey takes us into Simon’s creative world where every trial is answered with a desire to fulfill a dream.

Ruth Fitzmaurice, spouse of film subject Simon Fitzmaurice, in attendance for post-screening Q&As.
