Description

Allan King's seminal and subversive masterpiece A Married Couple portrays anything but the ideal middle class Canadian family. Billy and Antoinette Edwards and their child Bogart let King and his crew film their domestic lives for 10 weeks, candidly capturing the trials and tribulations of their failing marriage in the process. Playing something like a 'Direct Cinema' Cassavetes film, this real-life drama is intense and insightful. Questions emerge not just about the institution of marriage and of gender roles, but also the very notion of documentary. To what extent are the Edwards altering their behaviour in front of the camera?
