Description

Films Changing the World: Must-see docs revealing staggering new perspectives and stories.

Geoff Pevere (program director of Rendezvous with Madness Film Festival) and CAMH clinical psychologist Shelley McMain join us to discuss how treatment of the mentally ill has evolved in the decades since Frederick Wiseman's groundbreaking exposé, Titicut Follies. Regarded as one the greatest working documentary filmmakers, Wiseman's career began 50 years ago with this controversial masterpiece that took an unflinching look at the mistreatment, abuse and humiliation undergone by the patients at the State Prison for the Criminally Insane in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. After being banned in the U.S. until 1991, the film is now recognized as one of the essential American films of the 1960s, still holding tremendous power and relevancy in how it reveals the moral neglect a society is willing to hide behind closed doors.

Post-screening discussion on the perception and treatment of mental health in the 50 years since the release of Titicut Follies with:

  • Moderator: Geoff Pevere, program director of Rendezvous with Madness Film Festival
  • Shelley McMain, clinical psychologist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH)
  • Dr. Kwame MacKenzie, Director of Health Equity at CAMH and CEO of the Wellesley Institute
  • Lisa Brown, Executive Artistic Director of Workman Arts
