Description

Among the most widely known and unanimously beloved NFB documentaries, Wolf Koenig's Lonely Boy is a behind the scenes portrait of the then 19-year-old superstar singer and songwriter, Paul Anka. The film was produced by the NFB's highly influential Unit B known for their experimentations with documentary form and for taking advantage of the latest portable technology, creating reflexive works of direct cinema. Capturing Anka at the onset of his promising career, the film takes a sly look at the exploitative commodification of pop stars and the superficiality of celebrity, cleverly figuring him as a tragic figure rather than a success story.
