This year’s Hot Docs Festival opened with the world premiere of Jennifer Baichwal’s newest work for good reason: in the face of ubiquitous injustice, her remarkable films—which include hits like Manufactured Landscapes, Long Time Running and Anthropocene—demonstrate the redemptive power of sharing stories. Into the Weeds, which tells the tale of Bay Area groundskeeper Dewayne Johnson facing off against agrochemical behemoth Monsanto, is no exception. Follow Johnson’s herculean quest to hold the company accountable for failing to label its most extensively used herbicide as carcinogenic. Though her subject’s journey is framed as deeply personal, Baichwal moors it to a backdrop of ecological crisis, bringing the precarious relationship between human life and the environment into sharp relief.
