Our series on the future of Toronto returns with the Toronto theatrical premiere of Peter Nicks' acclaimed doc Homeroom, and a post-screening panel on what's next for our city’s public schools. A moving and inspiring portrait of the senior class at Oakland High School in California, this unforgettable film captures its young protagonists at a moment of profound social change. As the traditional stress of extracurriculars, standardized testing and university applications mount, their last semester is eclipsed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the murder of George Floyd. Forced to finish their final year at home and online, virtual prom and online graduations are a few of the many milestones they celebrate behind a screen, but their fearless drive to change high school for the better continues with a final activist campaign.

After the screening, join three community leaders with deep insights and expertise on the public education system, as they sit down with the Toronto Star's Jennifer Pagliaro to relate this timely and profound film back to the challenges that face Toronto's students coming out of the pandemic and what needs to be done to support them.
