Description

There'd be no Wu-Tang without the martial arts films that inspired the Clan in their Staten Island youth, forming the bedrock of their rap personas and the wildly inventive samples they work into their beats. Shogun Assassin, from American director Robert Houston, is a perfect example, a re-dubbed re-edit of the first two films in the Japanese samurai series Lone Wolf and Cub, about an avenging ronin and his young son. A key touchstone for understanding Wu-Tang's cinematic universe, the film was heavily sampled in GZA’s landmark album, Liquid Swords, and is frequently cited by the RZA as one of his favourite films. Full of epic blood geysers and a droning, moody Moog score, Shogun Assassin has a vibe and aesthetic that is pure Wu-Tang, raw and unfiltered: a dark, dirty and violent thrill ride that's a hell of a lot of fun.
