Description

Doc Soup Sundays: A new spin on Toronto's favourite doc series featuring premieres of the world's best art, culture and design docs.

This is the first feature documentary to tell the full story of the incomparable Maya Angelou, taking viewers on an incredible and unforgettable journey through the life and times of a true American icon. From her hardscrabble roots in the Depression-era South to supper club chanteuse, performer in Porgy and Bess, coordinator for Martin Luther King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference, journalist in Egypt and Ghana, comrade of Malcolm X, eyewitness to the Watts riots and best-selling author of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou’s life has uncannily intersected with some of the most profound moments in modern American history.

Director Rita Coburn Whack will participate in a post-screening Skype Q&A.

Tickets: $16 (Bloor members: $12, $10, Free)

Co-presented by The Word on the Street.
