Description

Doc Soup: Hot Docs' monthly screening series that presents Festival hits and award-winning docs.

In 2013, Misty Copeland was given the lead role in the American Ballet Theatre’s (ABT) production of Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird. She danced beautifully the night of the performance, but offstage it was discovered that she had six fractures in her left shin, leading many to doubt she would dance again. A Ballerina’s Tale is an intimate look at Misty during a crucial period in her life, from the triumph of Firebird and subsequent painful recovery to her return to ballet and emergence as a pop sensation. Shining a light on important issues in the world of ballet, including the absence of women of colour and the detrimental focus on skinny bodies, A Ballerina’s Tale is a remarkable story of how great talent and willpower can open doors in a very exclusive world.

Director Nelson George, producer Leslie Norville and subject Deirdre Kelly will be in attendance to introduce the film and take part in post-screening Q&As.
