Strap on your helmet and buckle up! Meet the Middle East's first all-women street car racing team, hailing from the West Bank in Palestine. Grabbing headlines and turning heads at improvised tracks across the country, these five bold and charismatic women have sped their way into the heart of the gritty, male-dominated scene. In this fast-paced Hot Docs 2015 favourite, director Amber Fares brings us close to the drivers. Speed Sisters shows how diverse their lives can be in the West Bank—from having a relative sense of freedom to never having crossed the checkpoints to the sea before—although some key and stunningly memorable scenes remind us that everything takes place under the watchful eye of the Israeli military. Overcoming social expectations, community politics, family dynamics and so much more, these women shatter stereotypes and offer a high octane source of inspiration.
