Doc Soup: Hot Docs' monthly screening series that presents Festival hits and award-winning docs.
In 2008, Kimberley Motley left her family and career in the U.S. for a nine-month legal education program to train lawyers in Afghanistan. Originally in it for the money, she was shocked by the state of the Afghan legal system. Now, as the only foreign lawyer licensed to work in the Afghan courts, she spends six to nine months each year in Kabul, defending Western and Afghan clients accused of criminal acts and fighting against human rights abuses. But what happens when international troops leave the increasingly unstable region? Will she be able to continue her work in the face of physical threats and rampant corruption? Motley’s Law is a fascinating and jarring look at the personal costs of a remarkable crusade for justice.
Director Nicole Nielsen Horanyi will introduce the film and take part in a post-screening Q&A.
