Description

True Crime Tuesdays: All is not what it seems in this six-part doc series, all accompanied by special guest discussions.

Directors Ken and Sarah Burns bring a confident sure-handedness to this film about the Central Park Five: a group of black and Latino teenage boys from Harlem convicted of a brutal rape that they did not commit. Without resorting to sensationalism, Burns's calm and clear-eyed film nevertheless presents a powerful indictment of both the law enforcement and the hysterical public that rushed to convict these youth. The themes of racism and of the criminalization of young people of colour remain disturbingly relevant today, over 25 years hence.

Award-winning Toronto Star national security reporter Michelle Shephard will be in attendance for a post-screening Q&A moderated by film critic and author Geoff Pevere.

Critical praise:

  • IndieWire - "The most important documentary of Ken Burns' career."
  • The Hollywood Reporter - "Eloquent, even-handed and affecting."
  • NPR - "A vivid, involving documentary."
