Description

Go beyond the headlines and into the heart of one of America's best-known families: the Hemingways. Though celebrated for the achievements of their famous grandfather, Ernest, the family has also gone down in history for a series of suicides and struggles with alcoholism. Kopple probes this dark past through the life of Mariel, the celebrated author's granddaughter. Nominated for an Oscar for her role in Manhattan, Mariel reflects on her personal struggles with mental illness, as well as those of her sisters: supermodel Margaux, who died of a drug overdose, and Muffet, who has spent most of her life in and out of institutions to treat her bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Noting that seven of her family members have committed suicide, Mariel wonders what is in her lineage. Instead of running from the question, she decides to face it head-on, breaking many taboos around speaking about mental illness and substance abuse. Kiva Reardon
