Description

Winner of the Grand Prize for Best Canadian Feature at the RIDM and included in TIFF's Canada's Top Ten, Marie-Hélène Cousineau and Susan Avingaq's film is a tribute to performer and musician Solomon Uyarasuk and an investigation into how he met his end while in RCMP custody in 2012. Beginning as a celebration of Sol's life, the film intentionally challenges the biased representation of Inuit in the mainstream media, honouring the man who was and going beyond the headlines written about him. The doc then shifts into investigative mode to dig into the suspicious circumstances around Sol's death and examine why, in the year after his passing, there were 45 suicides in Nunavut, a figure 13 times higher than the national average. Sol honours a life and legacy, and brings to light the historical and colonial traumas that continue to affect Inuit communities today. Kiva Reardon
