Nineteen years ago, a group of women from India’s most vulnerable caste, the Dalits, founded a newspaper dedicated to rigorous, hard-hitting journalism. Honour the excellence of these revolutionary trailblazers as they negotiate power in a media landscape dominated by upper-caste men. Through raw and gorgeous footage that captures the journalists at work and at home, defiant in the face of discrimination, the film sheds light on the complexities of India’s reluctantly shifting social order. The conviction that freedom of press is inextricably linked to democracy finds solid footing in Writing with Fire—a conviction for which its central protagonists will risk their very lives defending.
