Garnering popular acclaim at this year’s Hot Docs Festival, Deconstructing Karen takes an up-front look at what happens when two women of colour facilitate a radically honest conversation about race with a group of Nice White Ladies over dinner. Between nibbles of cheese and pâté, Regina Jackson and Saira Rao, the co-founders of Race2Dinner, bring a host of submerged judgments and unconscious biases to light. Despite the mild air of reality TV schadenfreude experienced by witnessing the squirms of the Karens onscreen (an epithet describing all white women), the subject matter is vitally urgent: deconstructing internalized racism is a prerequisite for true anti-racist work and real justice.
