Taking the prize for Best International Feature at this year’s Hot Docs Festival, Blue Island deftly collapses memory, history and time into an entrancing panorama of Hong Kong’s past and present revolutionary struggles. The lived experiences of political dissidents from the Tiananmen era and prior are reconstructed and dramatized by contemporary young activists to forge a blur between narrative film and documentary. Parallels between intergenerational protestors are rendered with impressionistic brushstrokes, bringing questions about Hong Kong’s identity—real or imagined—gracefully to the fore while insinuating a future marked by challenging questions about its selfhood.
