Suffused with footage of old-growth forests and jagged coastlines, filmmaker Charles Wilkinson deploys breathtaking mise-en-scène to replicate the physical majesty and mystical allure of B.C.’s world-renowned archipelago. Featuring insights from Haida leaders, artists, ex-loggers, scientists, troublemakers and curmudgeons, the storied history of the former Queen Charlotte Islands unfolds with intimate panache. Released in 2015, the film is also a celebratory document of the fight against the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipelines, which have since been rejected. Known for winning crucial environmental battles time and again, Haida Gwaii provides a refreshing example of functional sustainability in a world beleaguered by constant ecological threats.
