In between breathtaking dance sequences, Bare reveals the artistic collaboration and conflict between choreographer and company as they build an avant-garde piece steeped in dark, primal energy and ritual with 11 male dancers who perform fully naked on stage. In a unique collaboration, director Aleksandr M. Vinogradov and provocative Belgian choreographer Thierry Smits address questions of body politics, gender, censorship and aesthetics as they explore difficult—and often taboo—subjects through contemporary dance. A creative exploration of the underrepresentation of the naked male form in performing arts, the film documents the arduous process of auditioning, rehearsing and opening the dance piece Anima Ardens (Burning Soul).
