About the film
Winner of a Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, Boys State gives us a one-week look at a thousand Texas high school seniors who put on an ambitious mock election in hopes of creating their own government. From the ground up, the campaign trail is a near-complete reflection of the American political system. Garnering support, citing promises, rallying the crowds, these young boys know exactly how to game the system and are fervently fighting to come out on top. Their surprisingly sharp understanding of political machinations offers up a unique window into the larger divide in America today. Notions of masculinity, race and human rights are all explored in thought-provoking ways. At times, the approach feels so self-aware that it borders on hilarious satire, showing us how the next generation is already skilled at making politics work for them. Gabor Pertic
