Honourable Mention, Emerging International Filmmaker Award

Set against the backdrop of Colombia’s fraught peace treaty with the FARC, meant to end more than 50 years of armed conflict, a mother and daughter begin their own journey towards reconciliation. Yira, a doctor living in exile in Cuba for the past 12 years, finally sees an opportunity for her family to be reunited and begs her mother to join her. But Ruby, a human rights defender devoted to fighting for Colombia's most marginalized communities, is reluctant to leave, especially when social leaders are still being killed at an alarming rate. Yira confronts her mother about her insecure childhood and her fears for her mother’s safety amid death threats. Ruby counters that her work is what makes her feel alive. A Colombian Family is a powerful mother-daughter drama rooted in disagreement—both personal and political—that frames an impossible choice between purpose and progeny, country and kin.
