To Conserve & Protect: Fighting for and collaborating with the planet
Over the lake-top village of Congo Mirador on Lake Maracaibo, a sheltering sky is filled with mysterious silent lightning called Catatumbo—a dramatic metaphor for what lies ahead. Once a rich and vibrant community, Congo Mirador has fallen victim to the proliferation of corruption, pollution and political decay in Venezuela. Built on stilts, its quiet rows of houses are now sinking into the silt and sludge of the lakebed below, plunging the community into turmoil. Sitting on unsettled grounds, the community prepares for the parliamentary elections. Director Anabel Rodríguez Ríos follows two women as they clash over political differences: streetwise local businesswoman and Chavist party representative Tamara faces off with Natalie, a struggling teacher who supports the opposition. As they brandish their political swords, a young girl named Yoaini becomes a poetic and powerful voice of reason. Heather Haynes
