Markers: Films that make their mark by pushing the boundaries of documentary

Cebaldo, an Indigenous man from a small village in Panama, has spent much of his life working as a fisherman’s assistant in a small town in northern Portugal. Overcome with loneliness and a deep nostalgia for his hometown of Guna Yala, he crosses the ocean to return home. Blending documentary and fiction, this poetic film is a deeper investigation of identity, displacement and memory as the root of the colonial experience. As much as land and geography becomes a defining aspect of one’s identity, so does culture. In Panquiaco, Cebaldo is confronted by the botanical healer of his community who, in an attempt to guide him back to his cultural traditions, raises concerns about Cebaldo’s ability to reconcile his life in Portugal with his desire to return to his ancestral community and land.
