Fleeing the war in Syria, two doctors and their children wind up separated across three continents. While the father reaches Canada, the mother escapes to Denmark and their two young sons must live bravely on their own in Turkey. As months race by, the couple must rely strictly on screens to maintain their intimacy with each other and their bond with their children, who are quickly growing up alone. Adjusting to life in their new countries, the former doctors are forced to accept the stark employment realities facing most refugees, and the children try to keep up at school while looking after themselves. All the while, the Kafkaesque asylum paperwork and interview processes of three different governments chip away at the family’s resolve. The tension between endless waiting and inspiring resilience comes alive in this moving look at the human consequences of an unabated war. Myrocia Watamaniuk
