Filmed over five years in Kansas City, Transhood follows four transgender youth from childhood through adolescence as they redefine coming of age and demonstrate how gender is reshaping perceptions of “the family next door” in America’s heartland. This nuanced and generous invitation into the lives of four families shows what growing up and parenting looks like beyond the insecurities, mistakes and milestones that are the norms of adolescence—from pronouns, transition steps and hormones, to fighting for LGBTQ rights and bathroom access, fending off hate and threats from online trolls and losing family and friends to discrimination. This longitudinal perspective allows for compelling transformations and serves as a reminder that emotional development and turbulence doesn’t end after adolescence, especially for trans youth, who must learn to negotiate the economic, social, medical, legal and educational barriers that will follow them into adulthood.
