American jazz musician Billy Tipton gained fame throughout the '40s and '50s as a pianist and bandleader. After his death in 1989, his trans identity was revealed and for decades he was portrayed as an ambitious woman "passing" as a man to achieve success in a male-dominated industry where trans representation was virtually non-existant. Cleverly asserting the dignity Tipton deserves, No Ordinary Man examines his life through the lens of a new generation by having a diverse group of contemporary trans performers tell Tipton's story layered with their own personal journeys. It is a unique tapestry that beautifully celebrate's Tipton's undeniable legacy as an icon of transmasculinity.
