In the early 1980s, the crack epidemic tore through America’s inner cities like a tsunami, ravaging all in its wake. Crack: Cocaine, Corruption & Conspiracy offers a searing, in-depth look into this defining moment in American history and how it continues to be deeply felt more than 30 years later. Piecing together a collage of archival news footage, compelling interviews and 80s hip hop, award-winning filmmaker and Hot Docs Outstanding Achievement Award recipient Stanley Nelson peels back the layers of an era to reveal how crack decimated Black and brown communities and rocked the nation. From Ronald Reagan’s “War on Drugs” to stories of families torn apart, Nelson examines not only the personal devastation caused by the drug, but also the shadowy origins of the crisis and the resultant, ongoing marginalization of Black and brown people trapped by the US prison and healthcare systems. Includes an exclusive conversation with Stanley Nelson about the making of the film.
