Artscapes: Creative minds, artistic pursuits and inventive filmmaking
Nonagenarian artist Kim Tschang-Yeul, one of the most recognized Korean artists of his generation, has built his singular body of work around the representation of a single, fascinating motif—the water drop. This collaboration between an inscrutable artist and his filmmaker son speaks volumes, despite documenting a man of very few words, whose practice embraces meditative silence. "He who knows, does not speak; he who speaks, does not know." The Man Who Paints Water Drops discovers non-verbal ways of expressing and understanding Kim's obsession with painting water drops and its origin, rooted in Korea's history. This portrait of a career and also communication—between father and son, artist and audience, artist and self—is driven by intimate access and serene skill at reducing and expanding moments and meaning.
