Description

Alba Sotorra Clua returns to Hot Docs with a story that follows the highly controversial cases of several women, most notably Shamima Begum (UK) and Hoda Muthana (US), who were radicalized as teenagers in their Western countries and traveled to Syria as ISIS recruits. With unprecedented access, Sotorra Clua enters the prison camp of Roj in Kurdish-controlled northern Syria to meet these women, many who are now mothers, as they openly share their truths to reveal what motivated them to make such extreme decisions. Within the camp, the women find support and pathways to healing; however, one Kurdish support worker is haunted by the horrors she endured at the hands of ISIS and questions if her efforts are ethical. In this deeply moving and unsettling film, the women express their desire for absolution and to return to their home countries, but their countries don't want them back. Heather Haynes
