Heralded as the father of the modern environmental movement, Stewart Brand's latest views on how to battle climate change have made him a pariah in the scientific community. In the '60s and '70s, he galvanized a generation, including devotee Steve Jobs, to live sustainably with his hippie bible The Whole Earth Catalog. A technological visionary, he organized the first Hackers Conference and developed the early social media platform The WELL. But now this oracle thinks he was wrong—that the green wave is too fixated on what is "natural" in climate science. Believing that humans need to explore all the futuristic tools at their disposal, he embraces controversial "de-extinction" research. By re-engineering woolly mammoth DNA, for example, he believes he can unlock the conservation of endangered species and expand the tool kits needed to heal the planet. A misguided outsider or radical iconoclast, Brand navigates his legacy in this fascinating scientific primer. Myrocia Watamaniuk
