The winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature and the Pulitzer Prize, Saul Bellow transformed modern literature with essential novels like The Adventures of Augie March, Herzog and Humboldt’s Gift. Some of the greatest American writers alive today credit him as their main inspiration. But Bellow was far from an easy hero. This first-ever documentary portrait traces the Canadian-American author’s rise to eminence while examining his many identities—from reluctant public intellectual, 'serial husband' and father to his role as a chronicler of twentieth century American life. Interviews with the novelist's family and friends, including Salman Rushdie and Martin Amis, help shed new light on Bellow's inner world and the way he turned life into art.
