In her career as an artist for four decades and counting, Marina Abramovic has made groundbreaking and controversial work that pushes the boundaries of what we call art—often using her body in strange and even dangerous ways. Occasioned by a retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art, Abramovic prepares for one of her most striking performances yet, in which she sits still in a gallery seated across from various spectators one by one, seven hours a day, six days a week. The Artist is Present focuses on this moment of reflection in Marina Abramovic’s career, raising thought-provoking questions about the nature of expression.
