Description

Taking cues from the likes of Russian dolls and This Is Spinal Tap, The Nowhere Inn blurs the lines between metafiction and mockumentary to peel back the complex layers of musician Annie Clark, A.K.A. St. Vincent. The film sees the Grammy-winning guitar hero set out to make an experimental documentary about her life as a touring artist, with kindred spirit Carrie Brownstein (Portlandia, Sleater-Kinney) behind the camera. However, they both find that depicting a rock star “authentically” comes with a lot of challenges; namely, existential crises surrounding identity and fame. It’s part cringe comedy, part concert film, and wholly trippy.

Part of our High Minded screening series, featuring the biggest-thinking, most visually profound and psychedelic documentary cinema.
