By today’s account, Billy Tipton was a successful transmasculine jazz musician who came of age at a time when cis was the only appropriate gender expression. After his death, when it was discovered that he was assigned female at birth, a narrative emerged that framed Tipton as an ambitious woman passing for male in order to make it in the music biz. No Ordinary Man pays homage to Tipton’s legacy in a visual pastiche that juxtaposes the auditions of transgender actors playing the part of Billy against details from his actual life as recounted by his son, Billy Jr. The result is a groundbreaking meta-portrait that celebrates the hard-earned strides that have allowed transgender identity to finally, simply exist.
