Description

The late-70s Anglo-Somali punk rocker known as Poly Styrene was anything but cliché. In a scene dominated by middle-class white men, she spewed lyrics about biracial identity, misogyny and the trappings of consumerism, paving the way for the riot grrrl movement. But her legacy was fraught by mental illness and an untimely demise that sent her daughter, Celeste Bell, on a filmmaking deep dive to exhume her past. Through old photos, personal effects and raw diary entries, Poly Styrene—icon, mother—is vividly resurrected. Featuring commentary from Vivienne Westwood, Neneh Cherry, Kathleen Hanna and The Slits, this loving memorial from daughter to mother deservingly commemorates a musical pioneer.
