In 1961, a grand museum extolling Socialist Yugoslavia's progress began construction in Belgrade. After the basement was excavated, communism fell and the project literally never got off the ground. It is in this derelict space, hidden from view, where filmmaker Srdan Keca locates his visually arresting study of modern capitalism. In this cracked utopian dream, Vera, a destitute mother, and Milica, her young daughter, scrape out a precarious life. Society makes no room for them. The city shoots up around them in a rush of cars that barely slow down to let them clean windshields for change. In the dark, they search for connections with other outcasts like Mara, an old woman who gave her daughter up long ago. But without money, no one's future can grow here. Beautiful and haunting, this urban tale mirrors many cities' poor souls, but here, the glories of the past provide the only light. Myrocia Watamaniuk
