Description

Our series on cultural innovators returns to the cinema with this rarely screened portrait of legendary graphic novelist Art Spiegelman, whose book Maus won the Pulitzer Prize in 1992—and became a surprise bestseller earlier this year, after a misguided effort to ban it in American schools. As the film chronicles Spiegelman's career from the underground comics scene to the pages of The New Yorker to the indelible panels of Maus—a bold reimagining of the lives of his Holocaust survivor parents as mice—The Art of Spiegelman reveals the development of one of the most distinctive visual and creative sensibilities of the past fifty years, and the simultaneous blossoming of the graphic novel as a creative art form.

After the screening, stick around for a special post-screening Skype Q&A with two of Canada's preeminent graphic novelists, Seth and Joe Ollmann, who will discuss Spiegelman's work and influence, and its impact on their own award-winning bodies of work.
