After the tragic death of her mother, ballet student Sara (Julia Stiles) moves from her lily-white Midwestern hometown to live with her father on the gritty south side of Chicago. At her new inner-city high school, Sara falls for Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas), a Black teenager with a rough past and aspirations of becoming a pediatrician. Can their cross-cultural love—and a few iconic dance montages—be enough to get Sara a spot at Julliard and Derek on the road to med school? The ballet–hip hop audition scene at the film’s climax is peak 2000s, and even if you weren’t a teen in the early aughts, the nostalgia and corny charm of Save the Last Dance is hard to resist. It’s not about to pick up any Oscars, but Stiles and Thomas did win an MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss, which is all you need to know.
