In 1985, Zacharias Kunuk made history as the first Inuit or Indigenous artist deemed eligible to apply for a professional artist grant at the Canada Council for the Arts. In his Inuktitut-language short film, From Inuk Point of View, the camera pans across homes in Iglooik as elder Pauloosie Qulitalik narrates, describing the parts of traditional Inuit culture that remain: the language and hunting. He laments the ways that Westernization has crept in to modern-day Inuit life, influencing clothing and livelihoods, all the while painting a picture of the true Inuit way. Several years later, four partners on the production—Qulitalik, the narrator; Kunuk, director and producer; Norman Cohn, cameraman; and Paul Apak Angilirq, editor—formed Igloolik Isuma Productions Inc., the first Inuit-led film production company in Canada.
Redux is a retrospective program celebrating films that deserve another opportunity to be seen on the big screen.
