Description

Escape to the world of artists and love in this delightful docu-series, making its exclusive theatrical premiere at Hot Docs this September. Screening over three installments—each featuring three episodes from the series—Artists and Love tells the stories of some of the most iconic creators of the 20th century and the muses that inspired them. Featuring power couples like Georgia O'Keefe and Alfred Stieglitz, Lee Miller and Man Ray, and Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, this audiovisual journey is catnip for art lovers of every taste and vintage. The films travel through the social worlds that defined these illustrious duos, raising a series of tantalizing questions: Is love compatible with creation? Can artists reveal themselves through romantic passion? Does love bring a renewed energy to art?

Episode 7 - Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore

Lucy Schwob was a photographer, sculptor and poet who went by the name of Claude Cahun. Suzanne Malherbe was an illustrator, graphic designer and photographer who went by the name of Marcel Moore. As they rebelled against labels and risked their lives for activist causes, these two exceptional surrealist artists were united by an ardent romance through life and death.

Episode 8- Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera

She was a Mexican painter gripped by chronic pain, creating self-portrait after self-portrait in search of her own identity. He was an unfaithful ogre and a politically charged, larger-than-life muralist. Ever the beauty and the beast, soulmates Kahlo and Rivera lived tumultuous lives of love, despair and fierce patriotism.

Episode 9 - Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky

He was a Russian painter of forms and figures, of abstraction, of the spiritual, profoundly inspired by his motherland. She was a German expressionist on the cutting edge of the Munich art scene. With others, they co-founded the influential artist association Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). Münter and Kandinsky’s long relationship is an avant-garde love story.

In German, English, French with English subtitles.
