Description

We all know the rock bands that managed to rise to mega-stardom and became household names. But what happened to all the ones that didn’t? Anvil! The Story of Anvil follows a Canadian heavy-metal band that peaked in 1982 with a highly influential album that inspired the likes of Anthrax and Metallica—and then dropped off the map to toil in obscurity for decades. Director and former Anvil roadie Sacha Gervasi follows guitarist Steve "Lips" Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner as they stumble through a harrowing European tour and reflect on failure, friendship and resilience. Despite their losing streak, the pair never stop believing that their next big break is around the corner, and diehard fan Gervasi manages to portray them in a way that’s frequently hilarious but never mean. Anvil’s luckless underdog story is all too common in the music industry, yet rarely given a treatment that’s as warm, poignant and surprisingly affirming as this one.
