In suburban Paris, young François (Jean-Claude Drouot) appears to lead an idyllic life with his good-natured wife Thérèse (Claire Drouot) and their two young children. But one day, he finds himself falling head over heels into an affair with Émilie (Marie-France Boyer), an attractive and independent-minded postal clerk—setting into motion tragic, far-reaching consequences for his family. One of Agnès Varda's most provocative and subversive films, Le Bonheur examines, with a deceptively cheery palette and the spirited strains of Mozart, the harsh truths behind fidelity and happiness in a modern, self-centered world. The disturbing ambiguity surrounding the film’s final scenes puts Varda firmly ahead of her time.
