Werner Herzog Retrospective: Get the ultimate education on one of documentary's greatest auteurs.
Following the production of Encounters at the End of the World (screening here Wednesday, August 10), Werner Herzog once again delved deep into the inner workings of an extraordinary place. Having gained unprecedented access despite strict restrictions and considerable technical challenges, Herzog used specially-designed 3D cameras to capture the world's oldest cave paintings in France’s Chauvet Cave. In this mesmerizing doc, he reveals a breathtaking subterranean world and leads us to the 32,000-year-old artworks. Ancient, pristine and astonishingly realistic drawings of horses, cattle and lions, for the briefest second come alive in the torchlight. In true Herzogian fashion, his hypnotic approach to the art weaves in wider metaphysical contemplations while teaching us about its Paleolithic creators. Through his gently humorous voiceover, we are invited to reflect on our primal desire to communicate and represent the world around us, and ultimately what it means to be human. Please note that this screening will be in 2D.
In English, German and French with English subtitles.
