Description

Since the age of 17, Fatna El Bouih has been advocating for progressive change in her native Morocco. Forcefully disappeared and imprisoned at 21, she experienced continued efforts to silence her during Morocco’s notorious Years of Lead, a particularly repressive period in the country’s anti-communist political era. Now, at 67, El Bouih is still working for meaningful change, focusing her efforts on gender equality and prisoner justice—in the present day, she is hard at work organizing the third edition of a film festival for juvenile inmates. A sensitive and intimate portrait, Fatna, a Woman Named Rachid revisits El Bouih’s storied past through excerpts of her memoir and figures from her earlier life. Deliberately paced and beautifully shaped through evocative sound design and masterful editing, the film crafts a striking portrait of a memorable woman. Aisha Jamal
